A BEGINNING
Baby Juan Luiz was born on February 16, 2001 and is one of over 15,000 babies that have been saved through the efforts of the Several Sources Shelters since Founder Kathy DiFiore took into her own home her first pregnant teenager in 1981. Kathy says that Several Sources Shelters started with the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, "Make me a channel of Your Peace. Where there is darkness let me sow light. Where there is sadness let me bring joy." |
ADVERSITY ARRIVES Peace was difficult to find in 1984 when, after having housed young pregnant women free of charge in her own home, Kathy was fined $10,000 by the state of New Jersey for running an illegal boarding house. Her story appeared in newspapers along with numerous television news programs. State Senator Gerald Cardinale sponsored a bill exempting non-profit groups from the legislation. When final approval seemed impossible, Kathy was inspired to contact Mother Teresa of Calcutta. The Noble Peace Prize Winner happened to be in New York to accept an award at the United Nations and, coincidentally, the topic of her speech was the rights of the preborn. Mother Teresa wrote a letter of support, which convinced those opposed to the legislation to change their minds. The fine was removed and Kathy's work became legal. |
Bishops Approve Blessing for Child in the Womb
BALTIMORE —The U.S. bishops approved the Order for the Blessing of a Child in the Womb for use in the dioceses of the United States with a 223-1 vote November 11, at their General Assembly in Baltimore. The bishops also approved a Spanish version of the blessing with a 224-0 vote.
The Blessing of a Child in the Womb, Within Mass and Outside Mass, in English and in Spanish, was prepared to support parents awaiting the birth of their child, to encourage in the parish prayers for and recognition of the gift of the child in the womb and to foster respect for human life within society. Upon approval by the USCCB and the Holy See, it will be incorporated in future editions of the Book of Blessings.

THE FREEDOM OF CHOICE ACT
Materials aimed at defeating THE FREEDOM OF CHOICE ACT – are available at the doors of the church. Please distribute them among your relatives, friends, neighbors and co-workers. FOCA must not be made the law. It will spend our money on ABORTIONS. No human being with a good conscience can justify having anything to do with killing anyone. Even if people are not Catholic their support can be helpful in our efforts to stop FOCA from being passed. Encourage every one you know to fill out a card that will be sent to each of our elected representatives. Thank you for any time and effort you put into this very important effort. - Fr. Dennis
With the 35th anniversary of the infamous Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision occurring this month, here are some thoughts to ponder:
"All rights presuppose the right to life. If the right to life is not defended, the defense of all other rights is useless. It becomes a lie, because it would mean that the defense to the right to work, to society, etc. applies only to some, and not to all."
Bishop Elio Sgreccia, Vice-President of the Pontifical Academy for Life, Vatican City
"The Holy Father speaks of the protection of life as the fundamental realization and respect for human rights. Without that realization, without that respect for the right to life, no other discussion of human rights can continue; it must be based upon the foundation of human dignity and the right to life."
Cardinal Renato Martino, President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, Vatican City

The 2008-09 Respect Life Program is now available.
This year’s theme – “Hope and Trust in Life!” – comes from Pope Benedict’s homily from last December in which he described a lack of hope and trust in life as “the obscure evil of modern Western society.” The theme complements key messages of the Holy Father during his historic visit to the United States in April. Downloadable copies of Respect Life materials from 1996 onward are posted in English and Spanish on the Secretariat’s website at www.usccb.org/prolife/programs/rlp.
