MESSAGE FROM FR. DENNIS ON DIVINE MERCY CELEBRATION
Divine Mercy Sunday, April 19, was an extraordinary occasion as we joined in celebrating the beautiful Mercy of God. The unity, joy, fun and love among us was striking. The number of people who turned out was beyond anything any one seemed to expect. People joined us who were new to our neighborhood and people returned home to renew memories. Many expressed joy and gratitude for graces and blessings they received. Others were happy to make new friends more than a few even improved their dancing talents.

Thank you to everyone who contributed their time, talent and treasure to make the day an opportunity for God to work so easily and joyfully on us and so many others. The most beautiful and important result of the day was the number of people who mentioned that they were returning to the sacraments.  (please click here for photos of celebration...)

(Click here and click on the date on the calendar)

Each week we listen to the word of God and pray that we will be transformed by the power of that word.  Today we hear one of the central texts of scripture as we listen to the Lord’s conversation with Nicodemus.  In that Gospel Saint John tells us that God’s only Son came into the world, not to condemn the world, but that all might be saved through him.  As we approach the greatest of all feasts – the feast of Easter – let us pray that God’s word will enlighten our minds and hearts, make our faith even stronger, and draw us closer to the Lord Jesus.

OUR REFLECTION GUIDE FOR THE WEEK BASED ON THIS SUNDAY'S READING  (April 19, 2009)

THEME:   FAITH

God exalts us when we believe and accept the Risen Christ as our Lord and Savior.

PROMISE:

“...believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in His Name.”  (Jn 20:31)

ORDER:

"Do not be unbelieving but believe - (Jn 20:27b)

DIRECTIONS:

  • As a community of believers, be of one heart and one mind in bearing witness to the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
  • Be of one heart and one mind in loving one another just as we love God and obey His commandments.

MESSAGE from POPE BENEDICT XVI FOR THE CELEBRATION OF THE WORLD DAY OF PEACE 2009 (Continued)

All of this would indicate that the fight against poverty requires cooperation both on the economic level and on the legal level, so as to allow the international community, and especially poorer countries, to identify and implement coordinated strategies to deal with the problems discussed above, thereby providing an effective legal framework for the economy. Incentives are needed for establishing efficient participatory institutions, and support is needed in fighting crime and fostering a culture of legality.  (click here for the rest of the article...)

YOUR PARISH NEEDS YOU!!!

We need volunteers to help with things that need to be done around the parish.  If you have time to help out around the church, property or rectory, please let us know.

People around the country adopt parts of highways and care for them.  Maybe you could think about something like that somewhere around the parish.  Your help is needed.  Our financial situation has made it necessary to trim our staff, if we are going to be in a sound position.  There will be things you notice that might need attention.  Demonstrate your love for your parish and check out what you might be needed to do.

Thanks for all you have been doing to make our parish strong, beautiful and a welcome oasis for people.

How much should I give to my parish?

"As he looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury.  He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins.  "I tell you the truth, he said, this poor widow has put in more than all the others.  All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on." - Luke 21:1-4

"Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear so that  I return safely to my father's house, the the Lord will be my God and the stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God's house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.""-Gen 28:20-22

How should I give?

"Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.  And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work."      -    2 Corinthians 9:7-8

35TH ANNIVERSARY OF ROE VS. WADE

With the 35th anniversary of the infamous Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision occurring this month, here are some thoughts to ponder:

"All rights presuppose the right to life. If the right to life is not defended, the defense of all other rights is useless.   It becomes a lie, because it would mean that the defense to the right to work, to society, etc. applies only to some, and not to all."

Bishop Elio Sgreccia, Vice-President of the Pontifical Academy for Life, Vatican City

"The Holy Father speaks of the protection of life as the fundamental realization and respect for human rights. Without that realization, without that respect for the right to life, no other discussion of human rights can continue; it must be based upon the foundation of human dignity and the right to life."

Cardinal Renato Martino, President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, Vatican City

The 2008-09 Respect Life Program is now available.

This year’s theme – “Hope and Trust in Life!” – comes from Pope Benedict’s  homily from last December in which he described a lack of hope and trust in life as “the obscure evil of modern Western society.”  The theme complements key messages of the Holy Father during his historic visit to the United States in April.  Downloadable copies of Respect Life materials from 1996 onward are posted in English and Spanish on the Secretariat’s website at www.usccb.org/prolife/programs/rlp
