 HAITIAN RELIEF

It is beautiful to encounter so many of our people who have sent donations directly to Catholic Relief Services to help the people affected by the earthquake in Haiti.

 

When you see the news reports each day of the misery our brothers and sisters are enduring, pray for those families. Thank God for the well being of your own family and rest assured that God blesses you for your continued generosity to the least of His brothers and sisters.

Weekdays - Voluntary acts of self-denial, works of charity, and acts of piety are recommended.

 

EASTER DUTY OBLIGATION

Catholics are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion once a year.  This precept should be fulfilled during the Easter Season

(1st Sunday of Lent to Trinity Sunday).

 

Catholics are also bound to go to confess serious (mortal) sins at least once a year.

LENT
Lent remind us, as Saint Paul exhorts, "not to accept the grace of God in vain" (cf, 2 Cor 6:1), but to recognize that today the Lord calls us to penance and spiritual renewal.  "Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel" - echoes Jesus' words at beginning of His public ministry (cf. Mk 1:15).  It reminds us that conversion is meant to be a deep and lasting abandonment of our sinful ways in order to enter into a living relationship with Christ, who alone offers true freedom, happiness and fulfillment.  "Remember, man, that you are dust and into dust you shall return" - recalls the poverty and death which are the legacy of Adam's sin, while pointing us to the resurrection, the new life and freedom brought by Christ, the Second Adam.  This Lent, through the practice of prayer and penance, and an ever more fruitful reception of the Church's sacraments, may we make our way to Easter with hearts purified and renewed by the grace of this special season. - Benedict XV

ST. FRANCES OF ROME

(1384-1440)

Frances’s life combines aspects of secular and religious life. A devoted and loving wife, she longed for a lifestyle of prayer and service, so she organized a group of women to minister to the needs of Rome’s poor.

Born of wealthy parents, Frances was attracted to the religious life during her youth.   Her parents objected and married her to a Roman noble.

The wife of her husband’s brother also wished to live a life of service and prayer.    They set out together—with their husbands’ blessings—to help the poor.(click here for the rest of the article...)

Fr. Barone was reassigned as chaplin at Trinitas Hospital.  He will reside at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Newark.  May God continue to bless Fr. Barone in his service of the church and may he continue to bless those he touches in his ministry of consolation among the sick.

If anything good can be said about a late winter snowstorm it is that it probably won’t last very long. Have you noticed the days growing longer and the little perennials that are starting to push their way up out of the ground as if to say “Don’t worry, spring is right around the corner”?  Well, to me, one of the best harbingers of spring is St. Patrick’s Day when everyone and everything around us is practically covered in green, the foremost symbol of growth and life. Poor St. Joseph. He just doesn’t get his fair share of March attention.

LENTEN REFLECTION AT ST. MARY'S & ST. MARK'S
will be conducted every Thursdays during the season of Lent, at ST MARK'S CHURCH, at 7:30pm during the 7pm Mass by
Fr. Paul Lehman
Fr. Paul served as pastor of his home parish - St. Michael’s in Elizabeth. On June 10, 1977, Fr. Paul was baptized in the Spirit in Steubenville, Ohio. This ushered in Fr. Paul’s active involvement in the Catholic Charismatic movement, which included extensive interactions with covenant communities and prayer groups.  Fr. Paul served St. Antoninus from 1989-1999.
NOTE:  English Station of the Cross after 7pm Mass each Friday of Lent

OF ST. MARY'S & ST. MARK'S

Mission Statement

The Society is a men’s spiritual and fraternal organization.  The principal objective of the society is devotion and reverence to the Holy Name Of Jesus.  The society sponsors Benediction once a month for it’s members and conducts various fund raisers for the church.

Membership is open to all Catholic Gentlemen of the parish 18 years of age or older.

Meetings are held in St. Mark’s Church at 7:30 PM on the 3rd Monday of the month.

QUESTION: Before daily Mass, some people hold out-loud, extended conversations while others try to get ready for Mass in silent prayer. Can we do something to stop these distracting talkers?"

ANSWER: Quiet, preparatory, silent prayer is the proper devotion before Mass. Maybe this Q & A will help to silence them, but don’t bet on it. Even if God said "Shhh," some would continue their casual, church conversations. Sometimes "talk" can be a bad four-letter word – especially in church, right before daily Mass. "Shhh"

CLEANLINESS IS NEXT TO GODLINESS

Please help us keep our church clean. Sometimes we have funerals on a Monday and there is no time to clean up before the funeral. Please consider staying a few minutes after Mass and picking up.

Thank you for taking the time to help out so that everyone will know we believe our church is really God’s House.
